The Government Security Profession Career Framework

The Career Framework brings together all the skills and roles for the security profession in one place. It helps you identify the skills required for your role and beyond, supporting your continuous professional development and career progression.

The Career Framework lays out the four security specialisms, with the role families and skills for each role. You can identify what level of skill is required for a role and what transferable skills you may have.

You can build your professional confidence, by matching your capability to the skills level required for your role, whilst building your skills set for your next career move, either sideways, to deepen your skills base, or upwards.

Anyone can use and benefit from the CFW. If you are an experienced security professional you can use the CFW to support your continued professional development. If you are new to security or curious about the profession, the CFW will help you identify what skills you need to develop for the profession, as well as the transferable skills you may already have.

The Government Security Career Framework can be found here.

Learner Pathways

GSP have developed comprehensive learning curriculums for each of the specialisms, including Corporate Enablers. Each role and skill from the framework is linked to a variety of learning and development opportunities, such as courses, qualifications, on-the-job training and accreditation.

Each specialism has a catalogue of endorsed learning mapped to each skill and role. A learner pathway for each role shows which learning you might undertake at each level, from ‘Entry’ to ‘Principal’.

Any learning you wish to undertake will be funded by your department. You require line manager approval before committing to any learning.

Centrally Funded Learning Offers

Keeping the Government secure from cyber threats is a critical task for the security profession. To assist government cyber professionals, develop the skills, knowledge, and experience to rise to new challenges in the ever-evolving cyber world, Government Security Profession team runs the Centrally Funded Cyber Learning offer for government cyber professionals. The offer consists of a range of foundation, intermediate and advanced courses, with colleagues from smaller and medium departments given priority.

Accreditation

Our accreditation schemes recognise the skills and knowledge of our profession against the professional standards laid down by accredited bodies. Accreditation means your skills can be recognised both inside and outside the public sector, increasing our professionalism and status whilst supporting wider career progression. We envisage that all Government Security Professionals, in all security specialisms (Physical, Cyber, Technical, Personnel) will work towards accreditation with an external accreditation organisation, in line with the government professionalisation policies.
